The Dogs of Havana

The dogs of Havana share similar features, just like human inhabitants of some cities might. They are often scruffy, generally medium sized and often have long tails. As far as appearance go, that’s where the similarities end. But the spirit of the Cuban dogs is largely the same, because they know things people don’t, they sense things that people may not.

If you ask the dogs about it, you’ll likely get a lengthy reply. And as you make your way through Havana Vieja, Vedado, or down the Malecon at night you’ll hear it echo though the streets. Their uninhibited, melodic bark doesn’t sound like the music in the streets.

As they lay on a sunny stoop or as they stretch out in the shade on a cracked marble porch, they rest easy. Their big brown eyes tell an earnest story.

So if you happen to come across a dog in Havana, smile, say good day and ask them how they’re doing. They will tell you.
