Alberto Korda’s photography exhibit at Foothill College shows that glamour is timeless and has room in any culture. The photographer, who is most famous for his highly re-adapted image of Che Guevara, comes to the United States with an exhibit that has a different take on culture, via fashion.
Korda shows Cuba through a glitzy lense, at times juxtaposed to the derelict city scenes and Tropicana nights the country is known for. Yet, Korda only lightly touches on the over-represented imagery of Cuba and instead focuses on the unfamiliar images of Cuban glamour that depict the culture from a fresh perspective.
The photographs were taken at the time of the Cuban Revolution. Although Some people call Korda a sell-out for straying form revolutionary propaganda in the subject of his art, this exhibit shows that at worst, he was a master of his craft.
